There’re All Greeks to Me

Monday, January 17, 2005 by Eric Farr 1 Comment

If Dan’s message on Sunday piqued your interest in the philosophies and philosophers that influenced the first century Greco-Roman world that Jesus and the Apostles ministered in, I’ve got a great resource for you. Life’s Ultimate Questions: An Introduction to Philosophy is a wonderful introduction to the major ideas that have influenced Western thought. Not only will this book give you powerful insight into the history of philosophy, but it will help you learn to think more carefully about the big-picture ideas that under-gird any worldview thinking and analysis.

In the book, Ron Nash looks at six of the most prominent philosophic worldviews: Naturalism, Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, Augustine, and Aquinas. Then he covers The Law of Noncontradiction, Possible Worlds, Epistemology, the Nature and Existence of God, Metaphysics and Indeterminism, Ethics, and the Mind-Body Problem. Each topic is presented assuming no training in philosophy. I had to read a few sections more than once, but everything is presented in a way that anyone can grasp.

While Nash is a Christian and presents all of the topics from a Christian perspective, he presents them fairly and with enough academic rigor that it could be used as an excellent textbook for any introductory philosophy class.

Also, it you are more of an auditory person, check out History of Philosophy and Christian Thought on BiblicalTraining.org. This is a wonderful site filled with free on-line classes by top-notch professors.
