The pastors of Grace Fellowship hold a sacred responsibility to “shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight…” (1 Peter 5:2a). The implications of “exercising oversight” involve providing Biblically-based direction on subjects that we believe demand a clear and specific position. We hope to honor Christ by fulfilling our role to “teach what accords with sound doctrine” (Titus 2:1). It is to this end that the elders of Grace Fellowship offer a position paper on Critical Theory.

The majority of conversation in the news, as I understand it, which has been so hotly debated has centered on “Critical Race Theory” which is not identical with “Critical Theory” although there is certainly overlap between the two. Critical Race Theory concerns itself mostly with racial injustice, and is much more pragmatic in its approach to solving problems through legal means. Both Theories may be equally non Christian but I believe they should not be taught without distinctions.

Karen, yes, we agree. There is both overlap and distinction between the “parent” category of Critical Theory and sub-category of Critical Race Theory. I believe we portrayed the distinction within the Position Paper. If not clear enough, feel free to reach out via my email so we might be of more help.
