I AM the Resurrection and the Life

As we go through the Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ video series as a church family our desire is to help each of us to remain focused on Jesus and the fact that we are his disciples and need to continue living as such. This Family Worship Guide is provided to help you discuss how to cherish Jesus more with those in your home.

Worship Through the Word

Before sitting down to do family devotion time, make sure to read the passage and reflect on the content in this section.

Read the passage:
  • John 11: 1-27 (for younger kids)
  • John 11:1-44 (for older kids)
Some points to share with your kids:

What are some things we learn about Jesus in this passage?

  • He is committed to God’s glory (v4,40)
  • He cares for others (v5, 33, 38)
  • He wanted others to believe in him (v15, 41-42)
  • He spoke with authority (v11, 23, 39, 43)
  • He is the Messiah, the Son of God (v27)
  • He is the resurrection and the life (v25-26)
Some questions to discuss as a family:
  • How then should we respond to Jesus?
  • What should we believe about Him?
  • How should we live?
  • How does this affect the way a follower of Jesus faces death?
A helpful note from the ESV Study Bible:

John 11:25 Jesus does not merely say that he will bring about the resurrection or that he will be the cause of the resurrection (both of which are true), but something much stronger: I am the resurrection and the life. Resurrection from the dead and genuine eternal life in fellowship with God are so closely tied to Jesus that they are embodied in him and can be found only in relationship to him. Therefore, believes in me implies personal trust in Christ. The preposition translated “in” (Gk. eis) is striking, for eis ordinarily means “into,” giving the sense that genuine faith in Christ in a sense brings people “into” Christ, so that they rest in and become united with Christ. (This same expression is found in 3:16, 18, 36; 6:35; 7:38; 12:44, 46; 14:12; 1 John 5:10.) The “I am” statement here represents a claim to deity.

Worship Through Song

Consider singing one or more of these songs:

Singing is part of the Christian Faith. Consider:1 Chronicles 16:9, 23; Colossians 3:16; Psalm 100; Psalm 104:31-35.  Including singing in our homes is a way to model and teach our kids about this part of the Christian’s life. Including singing in our homes also can enhance our families’ time as they sing alongside other believers in corporate singing on Sundays.

  • I Will Rise
  • Once and For All
  • The Lord is My Salvation
  • Salvation Belongs to Our God

Worship Through Prayer

In the life of Jesus, we have a perfect example of the importance of prayer. He demonstrated this through His instruction on how to pray (The Lord’s Prayer) and the many examples we find in the Gospels of Him praying (Matthew 14:23; Mark 14:32-42; Luke 6:12; John 17). Therefore, followers of Jesus should also be people of prayer.

Here is one example of how to pray as a family:

The A.C.T.S. pattern of prayer.

One example of how to do this is to go through one category at a time and each member of the family prays in light of that category. Feel free though to utilize in other ways.

For Example:

Adoration

To adore God; to praise God for who He is and what He has and is doing; to worship and love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength (Mark 12:30)

Confession

Acknowledging your sins before God. When you received eternal life through Jesus, a father-child relationship was established between you and God that will never be broken, but our fellowship with God can be hindered by unconfessed sin.

Thanksgiving

Expressing gratitude and praise to God for specific things He has done in you and your family’s life.

Supplication

Making requests and expressing desires to God on behalf of family, church, friends, others, the world, the lost, and yourself (specific requests).
