As we go through the Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ video series as a church family our desire is to help each of us to remain focused on Jesus and the fact that we are his disciples and need to continue living as such. This Family Worship Guide is provided to help you discuss how to cherish Jesus more with those in your home.

Worship Through the Word

Before sitting down to do family devotion time, make sure to read the passage and reflect on the content in this section. Pray for God to help you and your household understand and love Jesus more deeply.

Some introductory thoughts to go over with your family:

In the passage we are going to read today, Jesus calls himself the door/gate and the good shepherd. Why would he do that?

Did you know that God had told the people of Israel that they would have one shepherd?  Read Ezekiel 34:23; 37:24

Read Psalm 118:19-24. What do you notice about gates and salvation?

Let’s now look at John 10:1-18 and see what Jesus says.

Read the passage:

John 10:1-18 for younger kids

John 10:1-39 for older kids and up

Some points to share with Your kids:

Jesus teaches that the sheep must enter through the door/gate (1-2). Jesus explains that he is the door/gate (7-9).

Jesus teaches that the Shepherd calls the sheep and protects them (3-5). Jesus explains that He is the good shepherd who saves and protects (11-14). Jesus explains that he saves by laying his life down willingly (11,15,17,18). Jesus explains that he can save because of His relationship to the Father (15,18).

Jesus’ teaching calls for a response and many people are divided over who he is (19-24). Jesus explains that He is the Messiah and is One with the Father (25, 30-39). Jesus explains that His sheep know him and follow Him (4, 14, 27). Jesus explains that He gives eternal life by which his sheep will never perish or be taken away from Him (28-29).

Some helpful questions to discuss as a family:
  • How does this passage demonstrate that Jesus is the Messiah in whom alone is salvation?
  • Who do you say Jesus is? Are you trusting in Him for salvation?
  • What does it mean to listen to and follow Jesus?
  • How does the fact that Jesus said His sheep will never be taken from Him encourage you during difficult times?

Worship Through Song

Singing is part of the Christian Faith. Consider:1 Chronicles 16:9, 23; Colossians 3:16; Psalm 100; Psalm 104:31-35.  Including singing in our homes is a way to model and teach our kids about this part of the Christian’s life. Including singing in our homes also can enhance our families’ time as they sing alongside other believers in corporate singing on Sundays.

Consider singing one or more of these songs as a family
  • Shepherd
  • The Lord is My Salvation
  • I am the door
  • We’re Alive

Worship Through Prayer

In the life of Jesus, we have a perfect example of the importance of prayer. He demonstrated this through His instruction on how to pray (The Lord’s Prayer) and the many examples we find in the Gospels of Him praying (for example: Matthew 14:23; Mark 14:32-42; Luke 6:12; John 17). Therefore, followers of Jesus should also be people of prayer.

Here is one example of how to pray as a family:

Pray for a different category of persons each night.

For example, praying for:
  • Monday: Those who are not followers of Christ.
  • Tuesday: Government Leaders
  • Wednesday: Church Family and Pastors
  • Thursday: Family Members
  • Friday: Friends and Neighbors
