As we go through the Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ video series as a church family our desire is to help each of us to remain focused on Jesus and the fact that we are his disciples and need to continue living as such. This Family Worship Guide is provided to help you discuss how to cherish Jesus more with those in your home.
Worship Through the Word
Before sitting down to do family devotion time, make sure to read the passage and reflect on the content in this section. Also, consider jotting down 2-3 discussion questions to ask those in your home to help them reflect on how God’s Word applies to their life.
Questions to ask before reading the passage
What do you think it would be like to walk around in complete darkness, not able to see anything? What would help fix that situation? (light)
Well, in the passage today we read of the light that we need.
Read the passage
John 8:12-20
Some points to share with your kids
- Those who follow Jesus will not walk in darkness (sin-see note below) v12
- As the light of the world, Jesus gives life (spiritual life-see note below) v12
- Jesus, alone, is the light of the world. v12
Helpful thoughts to ponder
Walking in darkness is tantamount to walking in sin. Consider that John 3:19-21 says that those who love darkness do wicked deeds. Paul equates walking in darkness with separation from God (Ephesians 4:17-19). He also writes of not taking part in the fruitless works of darkness (Ephesians 5:1-16). We further read in 1 John 1:5-10 that darkness is associated with sin.
Those who walk in darkness are spiritually dead. They are in need of life and salvation which only comes from God (cf. Psalm 27:1; 1 John 1:7) Therefore the life that Jesus gives is spiritual life (cf. John 1:1-18, 29, 35). There is no other option for spiritual life. Jesus alone is the light of the world. Thus, he says, I am (and no one else) the light of the world.
Not everyone will accept that fact. Just look at how the Pharisees respond to Jesus in John 8:13. There they tell Jesus that he cannot call himself the light of the world; His self-declaration does not count. Notice how Jesus responds in v14 and 18. There he indicates that his testimony is true, and not only does he say he is the light of the world, but God the Father also testifies about him. Mark 9:8 (cf 9:1-8) records for us the Father speaking to Peter, James, and John about the reality that Jesus is his Son, to whom they should listen.
Worship Through Song
Singing is part of the Christian Faith.
1 Chronicles 16:9,23; Colossians 3:16; Psalm 100; Psalm 104:31-35. Including singing in our homes is a way to model and teach our kids about this part of the Christian’s life. Including singing in our homes also can enhance our families’ time as they sing alongside other believers in corporate singing on Sundays.
Consider singing one or more of these songs as a family
Worship Through Prayer
Here is one example of how to pray as a family
Use the Lord’s Prayer as found in Matthew 6:9-13 as a guide.
For Example:
- Pray for God to be honored and glorified in our church family.
- Pray for God’s will to be done in our church family.
- Pray for God to provide for the needs of our church family.
- Pray for God to help our family members to be forgiving to one another.
- Pray for God to help protect our church family from sin’s temptation.
