The Gospel and Our Children

Wednesday, July 17, 2019 by Eric Groover Leave a Comment

Paul writes in Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing and hearing through the word of Christ.

Sharing the gospel then is not simply one of living like a Christian so that people see your life. It is necessary to proclaim, to share verbally, the gospel message so that others would trust in Christ.

As parents, we want our children to put their hope and trust in Christ alone. Therefore it is necessary for us to tell our children the gospel. So, let me ask you, how often do you talk with your kids about the gospel? How often do you proclaim to them the good news of Jesus Christ?

We need to regularly be sharing and explaining the gospel to our children. And the wonderful reality is that this can occur throughout the day in formal and informal ways.

When your children wake up in the morning, there are opportunities to praise God for new mercies through Christ. When they are fussing with their siblings, we have the opportunity to point them to Christ. When they disobey our instructions, we should point them to Christ. When we sit at the dinner table to have a family meal, we can have conversations about what Christ has done for wretched sinners like us. When we tuck them in at night, we can pray for God to give them new hearts so that would repent and trust in Christ alone. Daily, we have these opportunities and so much more tell our children of Christ.

As you continue to share the gospel with your children the Legacy Children’s Ministry wanted to make you aware of a resource that can help you with proclaiming the good news of Jesus to them. It is a devotional book called God’s Gospelby Jill Nelson. Here is a short synopsis about the book.

In God’s Gospel, Jill Nelson guides parents and their young children through the basics of the gospel, exploring even complex theological topics in easy-to-understand, kid-friendly language. At the end of each ready-made lesson, Nelson includes additional questions for reflection and family activities that will help children to remember what they have learned. This full-color, illustrated book is an ideal devotional tool for families with young children. Covering such questions as What is sin? and Why did Jesus die on the cross? God’s Gospel leads kids through God’s plan to save his people from their sins, directing readers to Jesus as their personal Savior.

What a privilege it is to be the beautiful feet that Paul talks about in Romans 10:15 who bring the good news to another person. How glorious it is to tell our children of the wonders that God has done through Christ. May God pour out saving faith and grace on our children!
