Being Intentional Parents

Thursday, May 31, 2018 by Eric Groover Leave a Comment

Parents, how is your family planning on spending the summer?  How will your kids be spending their time without school? Are you being intentional with their time?

Have you thought about how you can be intentional with the spiritual growth of your children during these days?

Be Intentional this Summer

Imparting a godly legacy takes intentionality on our part as parents. The days get busy and then the next thing you know weeks and months have gone by and we wonder what happened to the time. As you seek to impart a godly legacy to your children, make sure to be intentional about teaching your kids about Jesus this summer.

As I have heard it said before, “Don’t simply prioritize what’s on your schedule, rather schedule your priorities.”

When it comes to thinking about what your children will be doing this summer consider approaching the calendar with the idea of making sure the priority of disciple-making in on your schedule.

Certainly, disciple-making isn’t purely boiled down to making sure you have the correct activities scheduled in order to point your children to Christ. Disciple-making happens at various times and ways in all of life. The point I want you to consider however is that if we as parents aren’t mindful to make imparting a godly legacy to our children then we will be missing countless opportunities every day.

Don’t Wait, Plan Now

Here are a few questions to jumpstart your thinking about being intentional with your kids this summer (and beyond).

  • Do we have planned times of reading the Bible and praying together with our kids?
  • Do I, as a parent, think about being intentional with conversations with my kids (i.e. in the car, sitting around the dinner table).
  • Do I think of questions purposefully to ask my kids about the gospel or other topics related to the Christian faith that I want to make sure to share with them?
  • Do I have regular time just hanging out with my kids as part of my schedule or is it more random and haphazard
  • What is one thing (habit, belief, etc) that I need to change this summer so that I can be more intentional in imparting a godly legacy to my children?
  • As I evaluate my need to be more intentional with my kids, what is my motivation? My performance? Or God’s glory?
