This narrative, which on its surface appears to be about the kings of Israel, is actually about the King of Kings. And every episode we study over the next few weeks is intended to reveal more and more about the God we serve. Our section of the story today, 1 Samuel 17-20, will chronicle some of the events and encounters in David’s young life that God used to prepare him for later life. God’s purpose, as clearly seen in the pages of Scripture, was to exercise, test and strengthen qualities in David such as trust in God, prayerfulness, self-control, cool-headedness, consideration of others and the hope of God to bring good things out of terrible situations.
