Canadian journalist Andrew Coyne said this, “A society that believes in nothing can offer no argument even against death. A culture that has lost its faith in life cannot comprehend why it should be endured.” Has our society so devalued life…life in the womb, recently born new life, life that is under attack by disease, life that is near its apparent end in the aged…that we now call it courageous to quit and actually kill that life, even when it is our own? Without the anchor of being created in the image of the one true God to glorify Him both in health and in disease, it is easy to see how the value of life can be directly related to its utility.
Wesley J. Smith has written an excellent article on how our society has radically changed its definition of what courage is in the face of death. And while his article doesn’t deal directly with the cause of this amazing shift, it is apparent that as society moves further away from God its view of the sanctity of life diminishes. As society continues to reject any and all facets of a Christian worldview, it is simultaneously jettisoning the common grace that God built into following His commands.
