In the crucifixion (John 19:16-27) and the death of Jesus (John 19:28-37) we see the final proving ground regarding the person of Jesus. Common sense tells us that when a person is knowingly facing the final hours of his or her life, the truest expressions of who they really are will be revealed. An angry criminal will lash out in his anger. A lawbreaker who feels the oncoming judgment of eternity will confess their guilt and seek mercy. An apathetic person who has embraced the notion of leaving this world would remain silent.
If death reveals who we are, then the verses we will be considering today are critical for us in revealing the person of Jesus – a pursuit in which John the Apostle has set as his goal in the writing of the Gospel of John (John 20:30-31).
