Our passage today cannot be found in any of the other Gospel accounts. Because it is unique to John’s Gospel, we know it was included to demonstrate that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that bay believing in Jesus, all may have life (John 20:30-31). In this passage, John shows the Creator of the universe bloodied and bruised, humbly and quietly standing in front of that which He created. In this moment, Pilate has a choice to make: release the man that he knows is innocent or shore up his job and placate the people by having that Man killed. In mockingly calling Christ the “King of the Jews”, Pilate inadvertently and ironically speaks beautiful truth as he judges and condemns Jesus to death. What will you do with Jesus?
