The Jewish leaders as well as the Roman governor, Pilate, all thought they had control of the circumstances surrounding the trial of Jesus. Their fears drove them to more and more desperate measures in order to retain that control. Pilate even proclaims his “power” to Jesus when he asks him, “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” To this Jesus responds to Pilate—and to you and me—“You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.” The notion that God is in control of every single event that happens is a terrifying thought. But, for the believer, it is profoundly comforting.
