We enter back into the trial scenes found in the Gospel of John. The key to understanding this section of Scripture is to realize that Jesus’ intent through it all is to reveal His trust and love toward the Father so that the world will “know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me” (John 17:23).
In today’s passage we will see Pilot move through three unique scenes – Pilot’s plot to have Jesus released, the pronouncement by Pilot of Jesus’ innocence, and then the presentation of Jesus by Pilot (“Behold the man”). Typical of the Apostle John’s writing style irony abounds. John’s picture of Pilot’s fear of the Jews, the Jews fear of Jesus and Jesus’ fearing nobody and nothing is meant to be striking. Why? Jesus’ is consumed with His mission to rescue humanity and, thereby, reveal His loving obedience to the Father. Amazing.
