Colombia Mission Trip 2014 – Day 7

Friday, July 4, 2014 by Ken Rutherford Leave a Comment

On Thursday, we returned to Yumbo to work in another school. After a long day on Wednesday, it was tough to get up early again (we had to load up at 7:00 on Wednesday, 7:15 on Thursday) but we have had no whining or complaining except from Ken, Pat, and Larry—the old men on the trip (JK).

This other school also did double sessions and the morning session was primarily 1st through 3rd grade (we hope that these good experiences will open a door for us to get into the middle and high school in the future). The students did their presentations and we spent the rest of the morning interacting with them through face painting and balloon art (Marty won the sword fight this time).

We returned to the recreational facility for lunch. This time many of the students brought bathing suits and were able to cool off in the pool or play soccer and ping pong. After lunch we went back to the school and repeated the routine. There were far fewer students in the afternoon so we sent one group into the classroom of older students while the rest did face painting and balloons.

The day at the school was supposed to be followed with another lesson on the role of men in society at the local church. But since so many in the group were beginning to feel the effects of the long days and oppressive heat, we chose to send Larry and Kevin (as the interpreter) alone and allow the rest of the group to return to the hotel. This turned out to be a good move since our last day, Friday, will be spent outside in a park in Yumbo and should be a great opportunity for us to interact with the people of the town—many of whom already know of our presence since we spent time with their children the two days previous.
