Our passage today is the fifth and final passage on the person and workings of the Holy Spirit it is the peak of what the disciples must know concerning the “Helper” that Jesus will be sending after He departs. Jesus returns to specific ways in which this coming Helper will come to their aid. Like a father providing for His family or a mother caring for her children, Jesus doesn’t want to overwhelm His disciples, but must give them some final insights into how the coming Helper will uniquely and precisely carry on with them in the same way Jesus had when He was with them, albeit in the realm of the spiritual. Although this Helper would work in their “heart” the things the Helper will produce are exactly what they will need.
