In John 15, we have seen Jesus outline various aspects on what it means to be spiritual, to “abide.” Jesus has moved from His role as “the vine” (John 15:1) to our responsibility to bear fruit by obeying Him since He desires us to have real and meaningful joy just like Jesus had (John 15:9-11). Jesus now moves His attention inward, toward the attitude they should have toward each other. If the mission of Christ were to be carried on through the lives of the disciples, they must posses a compelling attraction that would be undeniable to a doubting world. Was this attraction the possession of proper doctrine? No. Was it commitment to the goal of sharing the teachings of Christ? No quite. Today, we will see Jesus shift the focus onto a quality that if possessed by His disciples would compel the world around them of the reality and reliability of Jesus as truly being the Christ, the Messiah sent from God.
