Last week we outlined how Israel failed to be God’s vine (c.f. Isaiah 5:1-30, Jeremiah 2:20-22, Psalms 80:1-19) and how Jesus proclaimed Himself as the “true vine.” Jesus’ proclamation is astounding. In all the ways Israel failed to trust in God, Jesus completely trusted in God. Since Jesus has been faithful, He now employs imagery that focuses His disciples on how they can continue on when He is gone. Jesus doesn’t talk about how to organize themselves for maximum impact or how to mobilize other disciples in the “talking points” about His death or give the “ABC’s” of grief counseling. Instead, Jesus focuses the disciples on what it means to be spiritual. What it means to believe in Him when He is gone. So if you ever wondered what it means to be spiritual or how “spirituality” works then you are the focal point of Jesus’ teaching in this section of Scripture.
