In our passage today, we see Jesus continue in the idea of relationship yet in the imagery of continual reliance. Remember, we are hours away from Jesus being arrested. Within the next day Jesus will be murdered. At this point in this final teaching of Jesus to the disciples (John 13:31 – John 17:26) we have considered how the promises of Jesus were based on His authority or power. Only Jesus could promise life (John 14:18-19) because He is the author of life. Only Jesus could make the promise of an effectual union (John 14:20-24) because it is His Spirit that works in us to produce a relationship of love for enjoying and following Jesus. We then considered the activity of the Holy Spirit’s through six promises Jesus made to His disciples (John 14:25-31). Today, we will continue in the idea of relationship, however, the transition from what Jesus promises to provide to why and how we are to rely on Him in our lives is what is in view.
