Have you stopped to think how incredible it is that we believe that the “way up there” God became a “right here and now” person? How far fetched this must sound to a person who doesn’t attend church. How ridiculous this must seem to a thoughtful person – a transcendent God contained into a finite individual. I must admit that at first glance it sounds incredibly outrageous. However, the issue of whether or not you or I understand something is not the test of whether or not something is true. If this were the case then the existence of everything would be contingent on our ability to understand it. One of the steps in believing the incarnation story of Christmas would be to discover what the people closest to Jesus believed about the incarnation. Did THEY believe the finite human Jesus claimed to be infinite God? Today we will consider what the Apostle John believed about Jesus becoming human and how this truth changes everything.
