Jesus moves from pronouncement of Simon Peter’s betrayal to the wholesale heartache among the disciples in the room (John 14:1a). Jesus seeks to dissuade their discouragement with a pronouncement of His commitment to their relationship. It is during this pronouncement (John 14:1b – John 14:4) that Thomas, wanting to be sure of Jesus’ commitment to them, poses a question (John 14:5) that spurs Jesus to make the greatest expression of spiritual exclusivity ever given (John 14:6). The concepts of Jesus being the only way, the essential truth, and the embodiment of life carries with it the essence of what we would classify as having a relationship with the God. Today, we will consider the entire context as well as the incredible ultimatum of Jesus – that He is “the way,” “the truth, and “the life.” We are grateful that you are with us. Thanks for being here.
