Judas’ has committed to betray Christ; he has left the presence of Jesus and the remaining eleven disciples in the Upper Room. Remember the timing of this section of Scripture – Jesus is going to be betrayed within hours. Like a cork releasing the most exquisite wine, Jesus begins to pour out His desires that are uniquely designed to fill the hearts and lives of His followers in the remaining moments He has on earth. The content of John 13:31 through 16:33 is given at this pivotal moment before Christ goes to pray in the garden, be arrested, tried as a criminal, and then crucified as a lawbreaker even though He had done nothing wrong. It is in these final moments that Jesus takes the time to outline the character and priorities of His disciples. It is in this final teaching time that Jesus outlines the very DNA of every Christian who will ever live. Today we have the privilege to enjoy the beginning of Jesus’ last teaching.
