Judas is an example that an entire life can be remembered by a single sin. Judas is referred to by name twenty-three times in the New Testament. Thirteen of these references are directly connected with the betrayal of Jesus. Nine of the other ten mention it in the immediate context. The Bible summarizes the life of Judas succinctly: Judas lost his “…ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place” (Acts 1:25). The one foul act of betrayal blotted out all that could have been remembered about Judas. Betrayal is more of a label than a simple word. When we encounter betrayal how are we, as followers of Christ, supposed to respond? What point of view do we arm ourselves with in order to fight for hope and insulate ourselves from bitterness? Today, we will consider Jesus’ reaction to his betrayal in order to gain strength to live a God-entranced life in a self-centered world.
