There is an underlying promise inherent in truth-filled theology – it works!  What I mean by this is that when a person adheres to a theology that truly represents and relies on God as He is then life will make sense.  Why?  Because God designed His creatures to thrive as they obey Him and He has designed us to enjoy life as we obey Him.  Even people who reject God can benefit from adhering to the “overflow” principles that flow from God’s commands.  For example, an atheist will benefit in life if he or she chooses to tell the truth. Why?  Because God has built into the health of all relationships the need to be truth-tellers. Trust in relationships is based on telling the truth in good times and in bad times.  Any couple that does not adhere to this principle will see their relationship degrade over time.  It is important to note that an individual does not even need to confess Jesus as Savior to benefit from God’s gracious design for His creation.  It is along these same lines that I see a societal trend emerging based on an article by Al Mohler.  Dr. Mohler cites a recent study shows that our society benefits from the institution of marriage in both the creation of financial stability and the development of a strong work ethic.

According to this new data, the average American family with married parents and at least one child under age 18 living in the same home earned $81,000 last year. Interestingly, almost all of the actual growth in this average family’s income in recent years has come from the wife working. Thompson directs our attention to this fact in order to make his larger point: our marriage crisis is making income inequality worse. Those who are getting married and staying married are, on average, moving ahead in the economy. In contrast, those who are not married are falling behind — fast. Add to this the fact that when people marry, they tend to marry someone who shares the same work ethic. The strong get stronger and the weak get weaker.
