Self-delusion is a powerful thing. We have all experienced knowing someone who believes they are something when they are not. There are the people who think they can sing like a bird when in reality they could not carry a tune if their life depended on it. Then there is the guy who thinks that, given the right training, he could have played big league baseball or been a star on the football field. While it’s one thing to daydream about being a great singing or hitting a homerun in the bottom of the 9th or throwing the “hail-Mary” pass to win the football game, it is something completely different to be self-deluded into thinking you are spiritual when you are not. Daydreaming about being a great singer or a sports star may lead to embarrassment, but being self-deluded about the true level of your spirituality will put your very soul in danger. Today, Jesus will confront people who really believed that were spiritual even though they could not have been more unspiritual.
