The teaching of Jesus always reveals the heart of a person. There are those who hear the teaching of Jesus and are changed, submitting to the love and Lordship of Christ. While there are others who hear the teaching of Jesus and are enraged, seeking to destroy or minimize Him as simply another way to God. Why? What is it about the teaching of Jesus that creates these extreme responses from people? First, Jesus confronts people with His absolute authority to dictate who does and does not have a relationship with the Father. Second, Jesus condemns anyone who believes that good works (or self-righteousness) provide any merit as a basis for a relationship with the Father. Simply put, Jesus places Himself in the role of THE exclusive distributor of spiritual truth and hope. Today, we will see the people in Jerusalem respond to these twin thrusts in the teaching of Jesus and, in the process, reveal their hearts.
