Thursday was a super fun day. It started with pancakes and bacon made by Rich, Kevin and Kyle and ended with smores by a campfire. Throw in some homemade tortillas, beans, and sharing the gospel and you’ve got a pretty awesome day.
It was a little chilly and foggy this morning and we had moments of light rain, but that didn’t stop any of the fun. A small part of the team went to install our last stove this morning and the rest stayed back to help prepare the food for the children. Helping to prepare the food and seeing the women in this village has been an eye opening and convicting experience for all of us. Many of the things that we consider “problems” or “hard” or the things that we feel we “need” or “want” are just not important and they really aren’t problems. These women have to grow their corn, mill it so they can make the tortillas, but before they can make their tortillas they have to walk 1-2 miles up the mountain to get wood so that they can cook their food. I don’t think I could last a week here.
We also spent some time walking around the village and we were able to meet the man that has the mill that is used to ground the corn into corn meal. Kevin met a lady that was getting her corn milled and she said we could purchase some tortillas. We were thrilled to be able to go to her home and watch her make the tortillas. Her daughter has been in VBS this week and she loved showing us her home and her pet rabbits. Kevin then bought cans of beans and we were passing out beans and tortillas to everyone.
One of the most fun things we do every day is serving lunch to the children. Today was especially fun because we helped prepare it and it was yummy! It was doblados with corn and cabbage slaw and tomato sauce. It was accompanied by a “healthy” drink of warm milk with cinnamon and sugar.
We continued with the game “papas calliente” and then had our last Bible lesson. Krista did a fabulous job teaching the children and the students were a huge help with the visuals. It was amazing to see how many children memorized their verses and the small groups were a wonderful time. The children really listened, answered questions and loved working on their coloring pages. When we gave them their goody bags, their eyes lit up. They loved the trophies and couldn’t wait to show everyone.
God has once again continued to awe us with His creation and His grace. To see the love of Christ and His people worshipping Hin in many languages, many cultures, and in many ways is encouraging, humbling, and stirs our souls to praise Him! What a mighty God we serve!
