We have our heroes, famous missionaries and martyrs who have given their lives for the advancement of the Gospel. We admire their sacrifice and their ability to suffer. Yet we often don’t understand why they suffer. Since we live in a time in which our lives are not directly threatened on a daily basis, it can be hard for us to understand the why. We have placed our heroes on pedestals as if they are “Super Christians.” This is far from the truth. In fact, they were just like us with similar worries and cares. However, they do have one significant difference. They had great confidence in God’s sovereignty and had a Gospel-oriented view of the future. We often don’t understand our eternal future, or fully trust God’s sovereignty. We have lost our confidence in the shed blood of Christ. This is exactly what the people are facing here in the text.
