We have considered how John’s writing portrays Jesus as being on a rescue mission to both the known and unknown of society. Jesus reachesout to the well-known Nicodemus (John 3); a religious man, highly educated and civic leader who knew Jesus had been “sent from God” and the unknown, the “woman at the well” (John 4). A woman who was hostile to Jews, poor, ignorant of the Old Testament, not religious, an outcast, and didn’t even know who Jesus was or why He would talk with her. This “woman” not only placed her trust in Christ, she was used to lead her entire village to trust that Jesus was the Christ as well.
Today, we will see why Nicodemus was wrong for not trusting in Jesus and why the Samaritans were right to treasure Jesus as the Christ sent from God (see John 20:30-31).
