Jesus had a mission of rescue to both the known and unknown of society. This rescue mission is seen in Jesus’ interaction with two people who represent the two extremes of Jewish life. On one side we have Nicodemus (John 3) a religious man, highly educated, high-class teacher of Israel who knew Jesus had been “sent from God.” On the other side we have the “woman at the well” (John 4) who is unknown, poor, ignorant of the Old Testament, not religious, an outcast, and didn’t know who Jesus was or why He would talk with her. Both these show how Jesus reaches out to all types of people from all sorts of backgrounds.
