The two of them could not be more different. Nicodemus (John 3) was a man, a religious man, a highly educated, high-class teacher of Israel who knew Jesus had been “sent from God.” The “woman at the well” (John 4) is unknown, only known to us by her association with a hole in the ground. She was poor, ignorant of the Law, not religious, an outcast, and didn’t know who Jesus was or why He would even think about talking with her. Then again, neither story is focused on them.
