Today we use the term “grace” for all sorts of things. But we often connect grace with a period of time in which we are to prove something or pay something. Today the term “grace” usually involves a period of time in which we are allowed to do something to avoid a cost or personal setback. For example, there is a “grace period” for people to pay off their credit card debit before a fee is charged. Teachers extend “grace” when allowing a student to make up homework or a test after being sick from school, etc.
Is this the way that the Bible uses the term “grace”? Is God’s grace like a “grace period” on a credit card that has a looming deadline when the payment is due? Or, is God functioning like a teacher who is allowing us to make up work so as to avoid a failing grade? In today’s teaching you will find that the grace of God is a radical concept that goes far beyond our common understanding of how grace is understood today.
