In weeks past, we have considered how Jesus wants all of His followers to have particular fears. Why? The fear of God reveals a value for God. When an individual fears what God wants us to fear, they are revealing that they value what God has told them. A healthy fear toward certain things in life is a bi-product of seeing God for who He is and will always lead to a response of worship. Freedom is a gift that flows from God-centered worship. Therefore, we need to know what to fear and why to fear it if we are to cultivate true freedom in our lives.
The opposite is also true. When a person elevates the desire to look spiritual (hypocrisy) or is motivated by the “fear of man” more than the fear of God, it points to the reality that the individual is valuing the creation (people) over the Creator. A person living in this way will experience bondage until they see God for who he is and embrace fear that leads to freedom.
Today, we will continue to consider another fear that all Christians should have: the fear of materialism. MP3 download.
