Can You Tell The Difference?

Wednesday, August 18, 2010 by Dan Miller 1 Comment

The Power – The Power is the next book from Rhonda Byrne whose book The Secret was massively popular.

Multiple-Choice Question
This video teaches that:
A. All of us can change the world by tapping into the power that is within us.
B. Disbelief of the power you have inside you will hold you back from fulfilling your purpose.
C. Everything you need can be found inside of you and this is true for all living things in the world.

Answer given after video.

Answer: All of the above.

This is one slick ad and we must be prepared to help people process the truth-claims that this book will push on co-workers, friends, and family.

Question: How would you engage with someone who is contemplating or has bought-into this type of belief system?

I think the first thing you need to do is acknowledge there is “power” in positive thinking. Like Henry Ford said “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re usually right.” So I don’t think it is completely crazy, the idea just goes too far, way too far.

I think the fundamental problem with the world view is the idea that sin does not exist. Stuff just happens. The stuff that happens is determined by your mindset. If so, I would want to start by asking asking if they had ever been wronged. Then if others could be wronged and how much of the right mind set could prevent such things. Then what about earthquakes, floods, famines, can the right mind set prevent such things? I would try to get around to asking if the proper mind set can keep you from wronging others?

Finally I would want to present my world view of a good God who created everything, and part of that creation rebelling against him; which explains the goodness and wretchedness of man. The same God giving his son to pay for our transgressions and faith in him being who he is as being enough for us to be reunited with the real power (of/in/throughout) the universe. It probably will not deliver all your hearts desires in this life but it will realign what your heart desires bringing you ultimate joy.
