It is just plain simple: If there is an infinite God that created the universe we live in then everyone should, as part of His creation, recognize the sheer power of His Being. As followers of Jesus, our response should and will go much further. We should build into our lives times of not only moments of simple recognition, but a lifestyle of sincere and heart-felt thanks for saving us for Himself. God has been so good to sinners like us!
In our “Thank You” series, we have been considering Psalm 23. In verse one there is a profound collision between the infinite and the finite: …”The Lord is my shepherd”… The infinite (“Lord”) takes on finite characteristics (“is my shepherd”) to David in the imagery of a shepherd caring for his sheep. Consider how amazing this truth is: David considered the Lord of all creation as his personal shepherd caring for him in the most personal of ways.
In helping you frame how amazing this infinite to finite dynamic is, I invite you to examine vastness of the created universe. The following is called “The Crab Nebula.” The Crab Nebula is all that remains of a tremendous stellar explosion. Observers in China and Japan recorded the supernova nearly 1,000 years ago, in 1054.The nebula is is 10 light-years across. Note: in one second light travels 186,000 miles, therefore, an object registering a distance of 10 light years is ridiculously large!
At the center of the Crab Nebula lies the Crab Pulsar — the collapsed core of the exploded star. The Crab Pulsar is a rapidly rotating neutron star — an object only about six miles across, but containing more mass than our Sun! The Crab literally “changes it stripes” every few days as these wisps stream away from the pulsar at half the speed of light.
It is incredible to consider that the same Lord who created our universe is the same God who refused to stay at arms-length from His creation. It is one more reason to say “thank you.”
