If the title of this blog surprised you (that true and sincere followers of Christ can have homosexual desires) than you my friend need to wake up. Paul places the act of homosexuality right alongside of “everyday” sins giving us a strong reminder that this is not some ultra-sin.
9 …do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. I Cor. 6:9-11
The force of the argument that Paul is making is not the obliteration of such sins (or even desires) after conversion, but the fundamental change in orientation to such sins – they are wrong and must be repented due to our new love for Jesus Christ. Prior to salvation these activities were considered right or, at least, permissible but it is now a clear violation of God’s Law and contrary to the Holy Spirit’s leading.
However, those who struggle in these areas (immorality, idolatry, adultery, thieves, greedy, drunkards, revilers, and swindlers) have a “flesh” that seeks to be satisfied. Which brings us to the sin of homosexuality. Is it any different for a person who emerges from a homosexual lifestyle? We are foolish and naive if we, as a Church, don’t create a community that desires to help such people. People who really want to follow Jesus Christ yet also really struggle with purity from homosexual desires.
To this end, I found the following article extremely helpful.
