How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth, Part 2

Sunday, January 28, 2007 by Eric Farr Leave a Comment

In this second installment of our class based on How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth by Gordon D. Fee and Douglas Stuart, we looked at what goes into choosing a good English translation.

We noted that there are two basic areas to look at when choosing a translation:

  • First is the textual source that the translation is based on.
  • Second is the translation philosophy of the translators.

We also took a whirlwind tour through other study aids that can help 21st century English-speaking readers bridge the historical distance between themselves and the original biblical authors.

Next week (February 4), Hugh Williams will teach on some of the foundational principles of hermeneutics. This lesson and the following week will not be out of the Fee & Stuart book; so, you will have a chance to catch up in your reading if necessary and preferable get a few chapters ahead. Starting on February 17, we’ll be covering those chapters one after another.
