As we embark upon our 18-week study of the Divided Kingdom, I am reminded of God’s hand in history. Why else does the Bible contain so much historical data if it weren’t for us to recognize that all history is “His”- story.
This is a little easier to comprehend when it comes to the histories of Israel and Judah and how they unfold to present the all-important consummation with the advent of Christ. Where it gets a bit more difficult is when we consider that, as recipients of God’s covenant promises, we are every bit as much a part of the unfolding of redemptive history as were Jeroboam, Jehoshaphat, Jehu, Josiah, and Jezebel.
That’s right. All of the events of my (uneventful) life are part of God’s ongoing plan of redemption. Even the most minor details. You never know just how much the minor events in your life might lead to major outcomes. For example, a Confederate courier in the Civil War accidentally drops his cigar out of his pocket. Seemingly insignificant? Not at all. The cigar was wrapped in a paper which had a detailed plan of the Confederate troop movements. A Union soldier happened to find the cigar and its most valuable wrapper. With these plans, the Union defeats the Confederates at Antietem. The rest is, as they say, history.
So you think your life is boring and uneventful? Just remember, your story is “His” story.
David Ennis says
Wow, the Union sure was lucky. And consider if the Confederacy had won, these United States of America probably would not have been able to withstand the world forces of WWII.
All you Yankees can keep your mouth shut. π

You’re not saying God was on the Yankee’s side now are you? π
Ken Rutherford says
Of course he’s on the Yankee’s side. How else do you explain that Jim Leyritz double in Game 5 of the 1996 World Series?
