Recently, we did a two week teaching that involved comforting others by passing on two rock solid truths to others around us: God is the God of all comfort (2.26) and God is utterly reliable (3.5) see sermons page. This past week Ken spoke regarding the need to disciple our kids in the Gospel. So the last three weeks we have tracked on knowing something and passing that thing on. In talking with people, it seems that a practical “how to” would be helpful. How do you actively pass your story to others? Consider applying the following:
Step 1. Tell your story as it relates to your life. In other words, when you discuss what Jesus is or has done, relate it to how it impacted or changed your life. Try not to make it antiseptic, but impactful to how you live.
Step 2. Credit the Holy Spirit with doing a work. Often we will talk about a Bible passage or a speaker we have heard, but we often don’t credit the working and moving of the Holy Spirit in our lives. People may not know all you know or hear who you hear, but they can perceive the Holy Spirit.
Step 3. Be honest in your struggle and failures. Don’t talk as if from afar, but from within difficulty. It is so easy to act after the lesson as if you did not struggle to receive an answer from God. Let the contours of mountains and valleys of your walk shine through.
Step 4. Complete the story of God’s goodness and power that drips with conversational worship. Always bookend your story with the bottom line truth that God is a good God (He is not after you even though life get’s hard) and that God is in control (nothing happens without His determination). When these two realities crisscross throughout our story the fame of God will spread.
What other advice would you give in order to become a “tube” (God’s working through your life to touch another life) and not a “wall” (God’s working stops in your life since you don’t pass it on to another person).
