We’ve started working through Training Hearts Teaching Minds: Family Devotions Based on the Shorter Catechism by Starr Meade as a dinner time devotional. It combines a the typical family devotion with the Westminster Shorter Catechism in Modern English.
I like it because it gives the kids a good, systematic look at the Scriptures. The devotional takes one question per week. Each day has a supporting devotional with a sprinkling of Scripture reading. I would prefer bigger chunks of Scripture at a time (it’s often just one verse).
I embellish a bit with myself–defining words, asking clarifying questions, challenging them, etc.
So, the kids are learning to answer the questions from memory while we teach them what the answers mean.
Some of the questions have been easy for the kids to memorize, but some more of a challenge. The first was easy:
Q: What is man’s primary purpose?
A: Man’s primary purpose is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.
This week, we are on question 4, which is a bit more of a challenge:
Q: What is God?
A: God is a spirit, Whose being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth are infinite, eternal and unchangeable.
But the kids are doing amazingly well with it and are enjoying it. If you are looking for a resource like this, maybe this one will help you out.
