I listened to some teaching from Louie Giglio last night from a DVD I received for my birthday. He asserted God loves Himself more than anything. This was completely understandable with God being who He is, but not something that crosses my mind often.
It started me thinking about the ramifications how this love and His character would manifest itself. God loves Himself to the extent He made a way for us to be loved like him. He sacrificed His own Son in order to impute Christ’s righteousness on us, to make us “look” like His Son, Jesus who is the fullness of deity in flesh.
This was definitely a paradigm shift in my thinking. I had some glimmers of this idea in my head in understanding God can rightly be jealous, because He owns all things (thanks Tray-c). But having some understanding that God’s love for Himself, not me, is His primary motivator injects some well needed “otherness of God” into my thinking and faith.
