A Cross! A Dream? Heresy…

Thursday, April 21, 2005 by Dan Miller Leave a Comment

In earlier blogs (see April 10,13,18) we documented Robert Schuller’s trying to “positivize” religion by purging out words like “sin” “repentance” and so on. We also saw his ability to build bridges with Muslim’s based on his unique feelings when in close proximity with a Muslim cleric – sounds like a carnival worker trying to pull coins out of those passing by! Well, today we get to see Dr. Schuller reinventing Christ to fit his delusional account of what it truly means to take up our cross daily and following Him:

“The classical interpretation of this teaching of Christ on ‘bearing our cross’ desperately needs reformation….” “The cross Christ calls us to bear will be offered as a dream… an inspiring idea that would incarnate itself in a form of ministry that helps the self-esteem-impoverished persons to discover their self-worth through salvation and subsequent social service in our Savior’s name…” “So the proclamation of possibility thinking is the positive proclamation of the cross!” “Christ was the world’s greatest possibility thinker. Do we dare follow him?”

Self-Esteem, pp. 22, 117-19

We can rest assured that Dr. Schuller would love people to follow his tamed, couch-potato view of the meaning of the cross. This view of the cross promotes a self-love and a positive self image that he lives for; since he lives for himself! Dr. Schuller drinks deep from the well of a kind of “inventive spirituality” – just make up spiritual ideas as ya’ go. False teachers will always twist the cross on which Christ died into a kind of dreamy ideal instead of a blood-drenched tool of torture. Dr. Schuller can’t see the cross any other way since he doesn’t need a Savior, he just needs happy thoughts.

Question:
What are other examples of people who seek to water-down Biblical truths that call for the Lordship of Christ in an effort to reshape Christian living?
